Mr. South Africa 2010 Johannesburg semi-finalist, Helgard Marais visited the ONS HUIS Trust and spent some quality time with the mentally challenged residents.
Ons Huis is an institution in Pretoria, at present accommodating 20 mentally challenged adults. It was born out of the conviction of a group of parents, who believed that their mentally challenged children could lead productive and fulfilling lives if they could be enabled to function as normally as possible in a safe haven.
“It was a very emotional day for me, spending time with each individual, who radiated a lust for life and abundance of energy and kindness towards me”
A remarkable team, General Manager Elsie van der Walt, Activity Centre Manager Rolien Brink and their staff showed a natural talent and skill to work with these individuals assessing each child's ability to maximise each individual’s abilities and provide the most stimulation, also ensuring they receive:
· sufficient physical and emotional support and protection against exploitation and abuse;
· constructive spare time activities;
· Improvement of social skills;
· the opportunity for each one to reach his or her full potential according to ability.
“Each of the individuals I spent time with today, made me realize how important their basic need is for touch and receiving love. I am proud to be involved raising funds in aid of this remarkable charity to ensure they can continue improving the lives of such mentally challenged individuals.” Marais said.
