An event was arranged by one of my fellow finalists in aid of Kids Haven, a non-profit organization that started out in 1992 taking in kids off the street. Since then they have grown to be a large successful charity looking after all aspects of street kids ranging from education, parenting, health etc.
These are 4 of the boys out of the 30 kids from Kids Haven that I was
assigned to look after for the whole day. I listened to their stories and dreams and shared in their excitement of the day in getting out, seeing new things and having fun. Most importantly for me though was seeing them smile.
They started off very withdrawn and uncertain, but soon felt comfortable in my company as they realised that this Mr. SA finalist is just another guy who was interested in what they have to say.
The Kids Haven kids had a good time with Mis
s. SA 2008 who showed her kind and friendly side. The day was finished off with individual gifts provided by 2 other finalists and myself. It was a rewarding day for me, working with these kids for a short period but recognizing their desire to be “normal” and loved.
